Mercedes Schlapp has no easy work as White House adviser for strategic communication. She has to deal with a president that acts as his own communications director as well as numerous legal fights which could disrupt the strategy of communication for the administration and a number of Cabinet secretaries embroiled in their own disputes. However, throughout it all Schlapp is focused on the mission at hand, working closely with White House's political affairs and legislative affairs departments and policy shops, as well as the broader communications operation in order to oversee policy implementations. So far, her focus has been on issues like school safety, opioids and infrastructure, and trade. She does not interact much with the media in the job she has. Her name was a big draw when she was named as a candidate to replace Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp has a tough job in her role as White House's strategist for communications. Her job is made difficult because she has to work with the president who is also his director of communications. There are also multiple legal cases which can disrupt the strategy of an administration's communication and several Cabinet secretaries entangled with personal scandals. But through it all Schlapp is determined to focus on her task in hand and has worked closely with White House's political affairs and legislative affairs departments and policy shops, as well in the communications department in order to oversee policy implementations. Her focus to date has been on topics such as safety in schools as well as the opioid epidemic infrastructure, trade, along with other issues. At the moment, Schlapp does not deal too much with journalists. She did draw a flurry of attention in March after her name was suggested as a contender to replace Hope Hicks as communications director. The fight has been ugly. Schlapp's ally Tony Sayegh and an alternative candidate with the same name, Tony, started jousting with each other on the news. After the Washington Examiner published a negative article about Sayegh Schlapp said she called the candidate to be relationship with her.
